Wee Wonders Grand Final 2017 – Winners

With the continued support of adidas golf, 2017 saw the event in its extended 3 tier format with 56 Regional Qualifiers, throughout Great Britain and Ireland, 9 Regional Finals culminating in the Grand Final at St Andrews 26-27 August.

 Qualifying this year was keenly contested with 3 players from each age group automatically progressing to the Regional Finals and 2 from each age group automatically qualifying from the Regional Finals to the Grand Final ensured only the most robust golfers made it through to St Andrews.

 This years adidas golf Wee Wonders Championships saw 2252 participants in the Regional Qualifiers, 616 participants in the Regional Finals and also saw the largest Grand Final yet with 209 players taking part.

The quality of golf was staggering with course records set throughout the weekend.

 The weekend kicked off with a fun speed golf team competition. A mixed team of children (from 5 to 10 years) and some parents got the ball round the 9 hole par 30 Balgove Course at St Andrews in 12minutes and 4 seconds in 37 shots.

This fun element showed that golf can be played quicker without much detriment to the competitors score!

 Saturday saw the first ball being struck on the Balgove Course by 9 year old Abigail Moore from Isle of Wedmore, Somerset to kick off this years adidas golf Wee Wonders British Championships Grand Final.

With 3 rounds of 9 holes being played on the Balgove course by Girls 9-10, Boys 7-8, Girls 5-8 & Boys 5-6 there was some exceptional golf played. Isla McDonald O’Brien Girls 9-10 breaking the single round Wee Wonders course record in her age group with a 2 under par 28.

Grace Crawford Girls 9-10 & Aidan Lawson Boys 7-8 also breaking the 3 round Wee Wonders course record in their age group with a 1 under par 3 round total of 89.

With the competition hotting up over the weekend on the Balgove course the following emerged victorious in their age groups:

Boys 5-6           Matthew Whitaker                      37, 36, 37 (110) Nazeing Golf Club, Essex

 Meanwhile the older age groups (Boys 11-12, Girls 11-12 & Boys 9-10) were battling it out over the challenging 5620yard Strathtyrum course.

 The first ball on the Strathtyrum Course was struck by 12 year old Joseph Gould from West Hill Golf Club, Surrey. Playing in excellent conditions Joshua Berry, Boys 11-12 produced a new single round record with a 4 under par 65 from the white tees,

Joshua also equalled the 2 round record with a 1 under par 137.

In the Boys 9-10 Sean Cooper equalled the single round record of 1 under par, 68 and Connor Graham equalling the 2 round record of 141, 3 over par

This year we had the extra excitement of a hole in 1 on the Strathtyrum course from Connor Graham on the 120yard par 3 16th.

 With the quality of golf it was a hard fought competition with nail biting finishes. Victorious over the 2 rounds were:

 For the first time in 23years of the Wee Wonders British Championships, Scotland came out as the top Nation of Champions
