Rules & Conditions of Play

The Wee Wonders Championships are played under the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews Rules of Golf. However, to ensure a fun, fast, and developmentally appropriate environment for our juniors, the specific Wee Wonders Rules of Play outlined below will apply and supersede standard rules where noted.

Core Principle: Good behaviour and golf etiquette must be observed at all times by both players and their accompanying adults. Smiles matter more than scorecards!

General Competition Rules

Format & Scoring

Regional Qualifiers are played using stroke play scoring (lowest gross score wins). The 1st placed player from each category automatically qualifies for the Grand Final. If a player qualifies from multiple events, their Grand Final spot will be taken from the first event they qualified from.

👤 Handicap & Club Membership

Competitors are NOT required to have a handicap or be a member of a golf club in order to compete. All juniors from beginners to experienced players are welcome!

📋 The Parent Supervisor Role

A parent or nominated adult MUST act as a Supervisor for their own child during the competition. You do not need full knowledge of the Rules of Golf; your primary role is to keep the player's score (agreeing with fellow supervisors after each hole) and to supervise behaviour on the course.

⏱️ Timings & Groups

Check in at registration at least 30 minutes before your tee time, and be at the 1st tee 10 minutes prior. All starting groups will be in 2's or 3's and played in their own age groups. (Single players will be slotted into the nearest age group).

Queries & Dispute Resolution

If an issue or rules query arises during an event, it must be raised with the host venue/marshal on the day and resolved BEFORE a scorecard has been signed. Parents/supervisors cannot raise a query following the event, as it is impossible to review and resolve effectively once the event has concluded.

Wee Wonders Specific Rules of Play

  • Pace of Play

    Maximum Strokes Per Hole

No more than ten (10) strokes in total may be taken at any hole, including a maximum of four (4) putts on any green. If a competitor reaches the maximum number of strokes or putts for that hole, they must pick up their ball and progress to the next hole.

  • Bunkers

    The 3-Attempt Rule

After three failed attempts to play out of a bunker, a competitor may throw his or her ball out of the bunker nearer the hole. There will be no penalty for doing so, but the three failed strokes will count towards their score.

  • Advice

    No Coaching on the Course

No advice may be given to competitors on the course. Information communicated to competitors must only be on rules and procedural issues. Players must make their own decisions on issues that affect the way in which a shot is played. A first breach results in a verbal warning; subsequent breaches result in a 2-stroke penalty.

  • Caddies

    Assistance with Golf Bags

All competitors are permitted to use trolleys. Only for 5-6 year olds is the parent/adult permitted to assist with pushing a trolley, carrying a bag, teeing up, and tending flags. Assistance is NOT allowed in older age categories (unless extreme weather dictates otherwise on the day, at the venue's discretion). Breach of this rule results in a warning, followed by a 2-stroke penalty.

  • Equipment

    Distance Measuring & Air Shots

Distance measuring devices (rangefinders/GPS) ARE allowed at Regional Qualifiers and the Grand Final. Please note: Air shots DO count towards a competitor's score.

  • Scoring

    Tied Scores & Countbacks

In the event of a tie for an award, countback will decide the result based on the standard system (better inward half). We look at the last 9 holes, then the final 6 holes, then the final 3 holes, and finally the last hole. If still tied, a sudden-death playoff starting from the 1st hole will commence. Countback in the Grand Final is calculated over the final round.
